Le grimpeur allemand est en vadrouille aux USA, malheureusement pile au moment où le pays, et en particulier son objectif principal Red Rocks, est en proie à une canicule. Forcé de revoir ses plans, Yannick s’est dirigé vers le Colorado. Par dépit donc, il a rétabli en haut de « Defying Gravity », 8C, en deux essais. Puis s’est dûment penché sur son départ assis, le 9A « No One Mourns the Wicked« .
7 séances plus tard, Flohé enchaine le bloc, qui ajoute un 8A pour rejoindre « Defying Gravity ». Ça pourrait sembler rapide, jusqu’à se souvenir que Hamish McArthur n’avait eu besoin que de 2 heures. Mais comme l’explique Yannick sur Instagram, le problème pour lui n’a pas été la ligne mais bien les conditions: beaucoup de vent, un temps sec (15% d’humidité!!!), le tout combiné à sa peau sèche par nature ne constituent pas la recette idéale sur un rocher lisse, voire patiné.
Conclusion: l’allemand propose de revoir la cotation à 8C+, arguant du fait que, bien que n’ayant pas encore croité de 9A, il en a essayé plusieurs et la difficulté de NOMTW n’est pas au même niveau. Rappelons qu’il a été le premier à flasher 8C, et qu’il a un 9b+ dans son escarcelle. Il s’agit de la troisième répétition du bloc (FA de Nathaniel Coleman, Hamish McArthur et Beckett Hsin).

The German climber is currently touring the US, unfortunately just as the country – and in particular his main destination, Red Rocks – is in the grip of a heatwave. Forced to change his plans, Yannick headed for Colorado. So, out of sheer frustration, he topped out “Defying Gravity”, 8C, in two attempts. Then turned his attention to its sit start: the 9A ‘No One Mourns the Wicked’.
Seven sessions later, Flohé sent the problem, which adds an 8A before merging into ‘Defying Gravity’. That might seem quick, until you remember that Hamish McArthur had needed just two hours. But as Yannick explains on Instagram, the problem for him wasn’t the boulder itself but the conditions: strong winds, dry weather (15% humidity!!!), all combined with his naturally dry skin – not exactly the ideal combination on a smooth, even weathered rock.
Conclusion: the German suggests revising the grade to 8C+, arguing that, although he hasn’t yet climbed a 9A, he has tried several and the difficulty of NOMTW isn’t on the same level. It’s worth remembering that he was the first to flash 8C, and that he has a 9b+ to his name. This is the third repeat of the problem (FA by Nathaniel Coleman, Hamish McArthur and Beckett Hsin).
