Dave Graham est toujours en Espagne. Après son premier 9b, le fanatique américain a quitté Rodellar cet automne pour la Catalogne, où il travaille simultanément pas moins de 3 voies très dures dans des styles plutôt similaires, courts et teigneux : “La Capella” (9b) et “Furia de Jabali” (projet autour du 9a+/b) à Siurana ainsi que “First Round First Minute” (9b) à Margalef. C’est dans cette dernière que Dave s’est illustré hier en cochant la variante de sortie plus facile de cet enchaînement très résistant de seulement 15 mètres de haut. “First Ley” 9a+, imitant Jorge Diaz-Rullo qui l’a aussi réalisé il y a quelques jours. C’est la 9ème ascension de la voie, pour seulement 4 réalisations de la version directe “pour les très forts” en 9b (Sharma, Megos, Ondra et Ghisolfi). Voici le commentaire de Dave laissé sur les réseaux sociaux, plein de motivation et d’enthousiasme à repousser encore ses limites et à plier ses projets du moment à presque 40 ans ! Inspirant !
“Après trois semaines de temps brumeux et humide, à faire des promenades et à changer mes méthodes, je me sentais très découragé et confus sur ce qui ne fonctionnait pas. Ensuite, les incroyables vents du Nord et d’Ouest sont revenus, apportant des conditions plus sèches, un ensoleillement et une bien meilleure friction. En fin de compte, je viens de finir par faire ma méthode d’origine, mélangée avec une nouvelle méthode subtile de Jorge Diaz-Rullo, et voilà, cela a parfaitement fonctionné ! C’est si bon de sentir à nouveau le flux, de bien grimper, de clipper un relais et de me libérer de cette sortie plus facile. C’est un peu dommage qu’il ait fallu si longtemps pour y arriver, mais c’était un entraînement incroyable pour “First Round First Minute” 9b. À la fin de la session, j’ai fait le dernier bloc de “FR” du repos au relais en me sentant solide, alors maintenant je suis super motivé pour revenir dedans et mettre quelques essais a muerte ! Je me suis senti bien dans “La Capella” et “Furia de Jabali” ces deux derniers jours, les deux autres 9b que je veux faire, ma grimpe prend un peu d’élan après des mois d’énormes efforts et très peu de progrès. Si heureux pour les semaines à venir, j’espère que nous pourrons avoir de la chance avec la météo, et avec une certaine détermination, créer de la magie. Je suis très reconnaissant d’avoir partagé ce processus avec une équipe de grimpeurs incroyables et motivés, muchas gracias amigos !”

After his first 9b, The American fanatic left Rodellar this fall for Catalonia, where he simultaneously works no less than 3 very hard routes in rather similar, short and powerful styles: “La Capella” (9b) and “Furia de Jabali” (project around the 9a + / b) in Siurana as well as “First Round First Minute” (9b) in Margalef. It is in this latest that Dave distinguished himself yesterday by sending the easier exit of this 15 meters resistant route: “First Ley” 9a +, imitating Jorge Diaz-Rullo who also climbed it a few days ago. This is the 9th ascent of the route, for only 4 realizations of the 9b direct version “for the very strong” (Sharma, Megos, Ondra and Ghisolfi). “After three weeks of foggy humid weather, punting around and changing my beta, I felt super discouraged and confused about what wasn’t working. Then the amazing north and west winds returned, bringing drier conditions, sunshine, and a lot better friction. In the end I just ended up doing my og method, mixed with some tricky new Jorge Diaz-Rullo beta, and voila, it worked perfectly! Felt so good to feel the flow again, climb well, clip an anchor, and liberate myself from the easier exit. Its a bit of a shame it took so long to make it happen, but it was amazing training for “First Round First Minute” 9b. At the end of the sesh I did the last boulder of “FR” from the rest to the anchor feeling solid, so now I’m super motivated to go back give it some proper burns!! Felt great in La Capella and Furia de Jabali the past couple days, the two other 9b’s I want to do, so finally feeling some momentum behind my climbing after what seems like a lot of months of trying really hard with very little progress. So syked for the weeks to come, hopefully we can get lucky with the weather, and with some determination, make some magic happen. So grateful to have shared this proceess with a great crew of amazing and motivated climbers, muchas gracias amigos!“
