Incroyable performance à la falaise d’Oliana en Catalogne, où la mutante slovène Janja Garnbret vient de réaliser la classique de continuité de 50 mètres “Fish Eye” 8c à vue ! Et cela tombe bien, car nous étions sur place et nous avons pu profiter du spectacle !
Pourtant la championne olympique n’était pas en réussite depuis le début de son séjour catalan… La veille, pour sa première journée sur place, Janja a subi des échecs cuisants à vue dans “Humildes pa casa” et “Gorilas en la Niebla”, toutes deux 8b+, en tombant bien bas dans ses tentatives. Ce midi, pour son 2ème jour, Janja retombe encore en fin d’échauffement dans “Humildes pa casa”, déclarant manquer de volume. Un bon repos plus tard la voilà remobilisée pour tenter “Fish Eye”.
La première partie de la voie, un 8a+ athlétique, ne sera qu’une formalité, et c’est fraîche que Janja exécute le premier pas de bloc du milieu de voie, gravi parfaitement, sans erreur de lecture et avec pile la bonne intensité. Quelques délayages plus tard et la voici déjà dans la partie haute plus conti de la voie, à presque 40 mètres de haut juste sous le pas de bloc à doigts qui en aura fait tomber plus d’un. C’est d’ailleurs la forme de la prise de ce crux, un bidoigt évasé et rond, qui donne son nom à la voie.
Après une hésitation dans le pas où Janja, à l’envers, s’est payée le luxe de revenir quelques secondes au semi-repos précédent, la slovène franchit cette dernière difficulté sous les encouragements et s’en va clipper le relais ! D’une impressionnante facilité, elle avouera quand même avoir pris les bouteilles !
Abordable à vue car dans la filière continuité mais jamais remise en question malgré les (très) nombreux ascensionnistes, “Fish Eye”, équipée et libérée par Chris Sharma en 2009 nous semble une référence dans le niveau. Il pourrait donc s’agir du premier 8c à vue féminin de l’histoire, puisqu’avant Charlotte Durif avait annoncé “Les rois du pétrole” en 2010, voie désormais décotée à 8b+. 10 femmes avaient jusqu’alors réalisé du 8b+ à vue : Katie Brown (“Omaha Beach”), Josune Bereziartu (“Hidrofobia”), Charlotte Durif (“Les rois du pétrole”), Maja Vidmar (“Humildes pa casa”), Sacha DiGiulian (“Omaha Beach”), Kajsa Rosén (“T1 full-equip”), Laura Rogora (“L-mens”), Anak Verhoeven (“Gorillas en la niebla”), Martina Demmel (“Humildes pa casa”) et Vita Lukan (“Geminis”), mais personne n’avait réalisé un 8c.
Il y a quelques années, la championne Slovène avait déjà réalisé de belles croix à Santa Linya avec “Rollito Sharma extension” et “La Fabelita” 8c flash mais n’avait jamais réalisé ce niveau à vue. Janja restant encore quelques jours sur place, il se peut qu’on assiste à d’autres exploits. Comme on reste aussi, on vous tiendra bien évidemment informés !

Incredible! Two days ago in Oliana, Catalonia, Spain, Janja Garnbret has just onsighted the 50m-long endurance classic that is “Fish Eye” 8c! And as luck would have it, we were there too and relished in the Janja show!
And yet, the Slovenian Olympic champion wasn’t quite firing since getting in Catalonia… Yesterday, on her first day at the crag, Janja fared relatively badly in her onsight attempts of ‘Humildes pa casa’ and ‘Gorillas en la Nieba’, both 8b+, as she fell low down. At lunchtime today, for her second day, Janja falls again in ‘Humildes pa casa’, saying she’s short on endurance. A good rest later though, she’s got the bit between her teeth again and walks to ‘Fish eye’.
The first part of the route, a punchy 8a+, poses no problems, and when the time comes to tackle the first boulder crux in the middle of the line, Janja is perfect: she ascends flawlessly, without mistakes and just the right intensity. A few shake-outs later and she finds herself in the upper part of the route, 40 meters off the deck, just under the last, fingery, boulder, which has caused many a dispiriting heartache with this slopy twofingerpocket which inspired the name of the route.
After hesitating in the said boulder where she misreads a sequence, the Slovenian climbs back down to the half-rest below, then, helped by the cheers, finally powers through the last section and clips the chains! Despite her impressive ease, Janja admitted being failry pumped!
Feasible since the route is endurance-based, its grade has never been put in doubt by its many repeaters and “Fish Eye” (bolted and freed by Chris Sharma in 2009) seems to us to be a benchmark in that difficulty. This could therefore turn out to be the first female 8c onsight in history, since Charlotte Durif’s ‘Les rois du pétrole’ (2010), although proposed at 8c, has long since been downgraded to 8b+. 10 women have so far onsighted 8b+: Katie Brown (‘Omaha Beach’), Josune Bereziartu (‘Hidrofobia’), Charlotte Durif (‘Les rois du pétrole’), Maja Vidmar (‘Humildes pa casa’), Sacha DiGiulian (‘Omaha Beach’), Kajsa Rosén (‘T1 full-equip’), Laura Rogora (‘L-mens’) Anak Verhoeven (‘Gorillas en la niebla’), Martina Demmel (‘Humildes pa casa’) and Vita Lukan (‘Geminis’). But no woman had done so at 8c.
Some years ago, Slovenian champion flashed some 8c’s in Santa Linya with “Rollito Sharma extension” and “La Fabelita” but never onsighted 8c. As Janja is set to be here for another few days, it is possible some more feats are on the cards. Since we’re staying too, we will keep you updated if and when!
